How the GPU and Mac columns are worked out: Smallest device where the Q4_K_M file plus an 8K-token FP16 KV cache uses no more than 90% of its memory. When the KV cache is not yet sourced we use the file alone and mark it with *. This is our rule of thumb, not a vendor figure; the device memory sizes come from the linked NVIDIA and Apple spec pages.

  1. Llama 3.2 3B Instruct, FP16 / BF16: F16 GGUF file size.
  2. Llama 3.2 3B Instruct, KV cache / 1K tokens: 28 layers × 8 KV heads × 128 head dim × 2 × 2 bytes.
  3. Llama 3.1 8B Instruct, FP16 / BF16: No BF16 GGUF in the repo; this is Hugging Face's safetensors parameter count × 2 bytes (the size of the original BF16 weights).
  4. Llama 3.1 8B Instruct, KV cache / 1K tokens: 32 layers × 8 KV heads × 128 head dim × 2 (K and V) × 2 bytes (FP16).
  5. DeepSeek-R1-0528-Qwen3-8B, FP16 / BF16: BF16 GGUF file size.
  6. DeepSeek-R1-0528-Qwen3-8B, KV cache / 1K tokens: 36 layers × 8 KV heads × 128 head dim × 2 × 2 bytes. This is what Ollama's default deepseek-r1 tag (8b) runs.
  7. gpt-oss-20b, Active params (MoE): Model card: 21B total, 3.6B active.
  8. gpt-oss-20b, Q4_K_M: The MoE experts stay in MXFP4 in every GGUF, so Q4_K_M, Q8_0 and BF16 files are close in size.
  9. gpt-oss-20b, FP16 / BF16: BF16 GGUF file size (experts stay MXFP4).
  10. gpt-oss-20b, KV cache / 1K tokens: 12 full-attention layers × 8 KV heads × 64 head dim × 2 × 2 bytes. The other 12 layers use a 128-token sliding window, so their cache stays tiny.
  11. Gemma 4 26B A4B, Active params (MoE): Model card: 3.8B active of 25.2B (8 of 128 experts plus 1 shared). Total shown is Hugging Face's safetensors count, which includes the vision encoder.
  12. Gemma 4 26B A4B, FP16 / BF16: BF16 GGUF file size.
  13. Gemma 4 26B A4B, KV cache / 1K tokens: Hybrid sliding-window (1,024 tokens) and global layers with shared K/V; we have not found a published per-token figure, so it is not yet sourced.
  14. Qwen3.8 27B, FP16 / BF16: BF16 GGUF file size.
  15. Qwen3.8 27B, KV cache / 1K tokens: Only the 16 full-attention layers grow with context: 16 × 4 KV heads × 256 head dim × 2 × 2 bytes. The 48 linear-attention layers keep a fixed-size state that is not included.
  16. Gemma 4 31B, FP16 / BF16: BF16 GGUF file size.
  17. Gemma 4 31B, KV cache / 1K tokens: Hybrid sliding-window and global attention layers; per-token cache not yet sourced.
  18. Llama 3.1 70B Instruct, FP16 / BF16: No BF16 GGUF in the repo; this is Hugging Face's safetensors parameter count × 2 bytes (the size of the original BF16 weights).
  19. Llama 3.1 70B Instruct, KV cache / 1K tokens: 80 layers × 8 KV heads × 128 head dim × 2 × 2 bytes.
  20. gpt-oss-120b, Active params (MoE): Model card: 117B total, 5.1B active.
  21. gpt-oss-120b, Q4_K_M: Experts stay in MXFP4, so quant sizes are close.
  22. gpt-oss-120b, FP16 / BF16: BF16 GGUF file size (experts stay MXFP4).
  23. gpt-oss-120b, KV cache / 1K tokens: 18 full-attention layers × 8 KV heads × 64 head dim × 2 × 2 bytes; sliding-window layers capped at 128 tokens.
  24. Qwen3.8 Flash Next, Active params (MoE): Model card: 125B with 6B activated, plus 51B n-gram embedding and 4B MTP. Total shown is Hugging Face's safetensors count (180.0B).
  25. Qwen3.8 Flash Next, FP16 / BF16: BF16 GGUF file size.
  26. Qwen3.8 Flash Next, KV cache / 1K tokens: Uses an extra indexer cache whose size we have not found published; not yet sourced.

How we picked these 10

Most-pulled model families in the Ollama library (all-time pulls, what people actually run locally) cross-checked with the most-downloaded chat models on Hugging Face (last 30 days, what is popular right now), both checked 2026-10-23.

  • Skip embedding, OCR and vision-only models.
  • Skip models under 3B parameters and over 200B (not realistic on one consumer machine).
  • Skip an older generation when a newer release in the same line also qualifies (Gemma 2/3 → Gemma 4, Qwen 2.5/3 → Qwen3.8).
  • At most two sizes per family.
  • Llama 3.1 70B is kept because it is still the most asked-about large model on r/LocalLLaMA, even though its Hugging Face downloads are lower.

Near misses: Mistral 7B v0.3 (Ollama mistral 34M pulls; 1.74M HF downloads/30d), older and superseded in practice; Qwen3.6 35B A3B (3.73M HF downloads/30d); Qwen3 14B and 8B (superseded by Qwen3.8); DeepSeek V4 Flash models (over 200B).

We could not count r/LocalLLaMA mentions systematically (Reddit blocks automated search), so that signal is qualitative.

How to read the columns

  • Q4_K_M, Q8_0, FP16/BF16 are the file sizes of the GGUF downloads (one quantizer, bartowski, for every model so they compare like for like). The weights take about this much memory once loaded. Sizes are decimal GB (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes).
  • KV cache / 1K tokens is the extra memory the conversation itself takes at FP16, worked out from each model's config.json: 2 (keys and values) × layers × KV heads × head size × 2 bytes, per 1,000 tokens. For models that mix sliding-window or linear attention with full attention, only the layers that grow with the conversation are counted, and the note says so.
  • Smallest single GPU and Mac unified memory apply our rule: the Q4_K_M file plus an 8K-token KV cache must fit in 90% of the memory. A * means the KV cache isn't sourced yet, so only the file was counted. macOS also keeps part of unified memory for the system by default, so treat the Mac column as the minimum, not a comfortable fit.
  • Released is the date the official Hugging Face repo was created, which is usually the public release day.
  • Active params only applies to mixture-of-experts (MoE) models. They still need memory for all parameters, but run about as fast as a model the size of the active part.

Frequently asked questions

Which of these models runs on an 8 GB graphics card?

Llama 3.2 3B (2.02 GB at Q4_K_M), Llama 3.1 8B (4.92 GB) and DeepSeek-R1-0528-Qwen3-8B (5.03 GB) all fit an 8 GB card such as the RTX 5060 with an 8K context, going by our 90% rule.

Why is gpt-oss-120b almost the same size at Q4_K_M and Q8_0?

OpenAI shipped its mixture-of-experts weights in the 4-bit MXFP4 format, and the GGUF builds keep the experts in MXFP4 at every quant level. Only the small non-expert part changes, so the files are 62.84 GB at Q4_K_M and 63.39 GB at Q8_0.

What does "not yet sourced" mean?

We only publish numbers we can point to. If a model's KV cache can't be worked out from its published config (Gemma 4 and Qwen3.8 Flash Next use attention tricks whose cache size isn't documented), the cell stays blank until we find a source.
